Hurricane Divers News

This month we are operating Hurricane Divers one year! Get ready for a party! On September 30th it is exactly one year ago we had our opening and you are invited to celebrate that with us from 3.00 p.m. onwards here at the Junior Plaza!

.

Opening September 1999

.

Looking back I think we achieved a lot in that year extending over two centuries. We became a PADI Resort Center and a proud DAN Partner in Dive Safety. We did over 200 PADI and DAN Programs & Courses, including the PADI Scuba Diver Course with a group of 30 students of the local university (UMAR) and the first PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) and DAN Oxygen Instructor Course in the Bays of Huatulco and Oaxaca. We have achieved a very high rate of Customer Satisfaction, we already had divers coming back to us for more. We have established ourselves as the only Dive Center in the area that sells equipment and we sold a substancial amount. We have set up a Reservations Office which is managed by Yvonne. We have succesfully organized several Adventure Packages including various activities like rafting and accomodation for different groups of people. We have had a lot of success with our Full-day Excursions and we are working on some more interesting stuff. We have done our share in improving the Dive Safety and Environmental Awareness in Huatulco by organizing and conducting in various courses and events like Medic First Aid and DAN Oxygen Provider Courses, a project to introduce school children to Diving, Marine Biology and the Aquatic Environment & the need to protect it and Beach Clean-ups. There is a lot more we achieved but I will not bore you too much with all the details. All in all I think we look back at a very good first year and I want to take the opportunity to thank everybody who helped make this first year such a big success, thank you!

Obviously we are not sitting back and leaving it like this, we are still working on ideas and improvements to be able to give an even better service, further improve Dive Saftey and Environmental Awareness and increase the quality and the amount of Courses and Programs we offer. We aim to become a PADI IDC Center this coming year. We are working on a more interesting range of excursions with, for example, an adventure trip to the waterfall of Copalitilla which you can descend with a rope (rapel) and including a visit to a coffee plantation and an altitude dive in a fresh water "pozo".  We intend to increase our equipment stock, amongst other things with more Scubapro equipment. We plan to improve the boats we are using to make them more suitable for diving. We will try to reach more school children to introduce them to diving and the aquatic environment and we will participate in the worldwide Beach Clean-up in September. There is too much to write it all down here, just keep reading our monthly newsletter to stay informed.

Natanael

Natanael passed his Instructor Examination and is now a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor!! The IE was in Cancun from August the 25th until the 27th and he passed it with flying colors (of course!). After more then 18 years working and teaching as a FMAS/CMAS Instructor he decided to become a PADI Instructor as well. Last June he successfully completed his Instructor Development Course (IDC) with Course Director Roberto Kraak and is already certified PADI Medic First Aid Instructor and DAN Oxygen Instructor. Congatulations Nata!

AKNOWLEDGEMENTS: thanks to Robert for the opportunity, instruction, flexibility and his friendship during this first year, let´s keep going! Thanks to Hydro Biologist Germán Robles Aragonés especially for his unconditional friendship and valuable help in Cancún, also congratulations with his very professionally managed "Interactive Aquarium"! Thanks to everybody who, in whatever way, supported me in achieving this goal and whom I cannot mention because of the space it would take up. And last but not least thanks to the most important ones in my life: Meche and Azul, my two little mermaids, for their love, patience and constant support.
To everybody: my promise to keep working towards my goals and improve the quality & safety of diving en Huatulco. Many Thanks!!

Natanael J. Mejía, PADI OWSI-170358

Website

One of the other things we achieved is this website and by your positive reactions it seems you like it! We have only got it out a few months so we are still working on it and improving it. The Picture Gallery is one of the things we are working on, we are still putting in more pictures so you can get a good visual image of Huatulco, the Dive Center and the Underwater World here. We are also trying to make the navigating through the site easier, you will see more buttons representing all the links. The German version is almost complete, we are working on the last corrections, most of it you can already find by clicking on the German flag on the Homepage.

School of JacksDiving Huatulco:

This August was definitely one of the nicest months for diving we had this year. Great visibility, nice warm water and loads of aquatic life to look at. We saw the Eagle Rays again at Cacaluta and Charlie told me he saw groups of them regularly at La Montosa as well. Lots and lots of big schools of fish, sometimes it was almost scary, the amount of fish around you!

.

The Bays of Huatulco:

The summer holidays made it really busy here in Huatulco, for us as well. Lots of people around and diving every day! A good month for the tourisme and by the sound of it most people really enjoyed their stay here in the "Rediscovered Paradise".

The preparations for the Mexican Extreme Sports Championship in October are also on their way. More and more people are coming in training for it and the organizers are checking out the routes.

In August we also had a visit from the newly elected president, a pity he did not come diving with us!

.

Calendar for September:

For September Natanael is planning to do a PADI Open Water Diver Course with a group of local people, this time in the weekends. It will be his first course as a PADI Instructor!

We also plan to participate in the worldwide Beach Clean-up on September the 16th. We want to clean up the beach and underwater part of the beach "El Violin". Everybody is invited to join us!

For the newsletter of October we are working on an article about Dive Safety.

.

For anybody interested: we have all the Old Newsletters on file!

The pictures you see above & below were taken by Alfredo during the Open Water Course he took with his son Carlos whom you see here in the pictures. You see him preparing, practicing and enjoying the diving. He is a little 12 year old fellow and it wasn't always easy with the equipment (you can see that the snorkel is about as big as his arm) but he enjoyed it tremendously. He is even thinking of becoming an Instructor and make his carreer out of diving.

Following some comments out of our Guest Comment Book in the Dive Center:

"I liked the course very much and I am grateful for being treated as a friend, not as a student. Thanks to that I am going to try to come again, maybe I cannot make it for Christmas but surely I will make it in April. I thank you because you made me like the course more then just a course and although I despaired a few times, you helped me like I was family. Thank you."
