Training at the professional level Hurricane Divers News

The big news is that Roberto has his IDC/IOC authorized for November this year! Have you always dreamt of becoming a PADI Instructor? Here is your chance, if you have 60 dives logged,  you are a certified diver for 6 months and you are a PADI Dive master or Assistent Instructor you can do the Instructor Development Course here in our "Redicovered Paradise", the Bays of Huatulco.

Lying on the Emerald Coast of the Pacific we have nice warm water, an abundance of marine life, beautiful nature surrounding us and above all, tranquility. The IDC takes place over 10 days so there is plenty of time to do everything and have a couple of pleasure dives in between (included in the price!). If you need accomodation we will be glad to arrange that for you and for the first 8 lucky applicants we pay half of the cost of your stay in a hotel of our choice for the duration of the program.

If you are not a Divemaster yet but you are still interested in becoming an Instructor and maybe even in doing the IDC in November you can participate in our Prepararion Program. We do this in the weeks before the IDC and the program consists of the PADI Rescue Diver Course, the Medic First Aid Course and the PADI Divemaster Course.

For more info on our professional level courses go to Courses and for dates of our courses send us an e-mail.

Rafting (Photo by Aventuras Piraguas)Adventure!

In June we organized a succesful adventure weekend for "The Dupont Adventure Team". The group of 12 people spent 3 days in Huatulco and went Diving, Rafting and on a tour with "Quatri Motos" and they all had a terrific time, in fact thety are already planning their next adventure trip to Huatulco!

Where does the word Hurricane come from?

Originally Huracan or Haracan was used by the Taino Indians (Taino means "Nobel People") that populated some of the Nothern Antilles in the Carribean, and ment "Spirit of Mayhem" in their language. One of the Islands they lived on, Hispañola (in Taino it was called Quisqueya or "Mother Earth"), better known as the Domincan Republic and Haiti, was the first land that Columbus found in 1492 and since then a lot of words from the Taino language were taken over by the Spanish and spread around the world. A few examples are: barbeque, tabacco, banana, hamoc, potato and various other names for fruits and vegetables.

Website

We keep working to improve our website and one of the features you asked for was something to click on to go back to the top of the page. We are integrating that and you will find it now in most pages. Soon we will also have a more extensive Picture Gallery with not only pictures of our underwater world but also of Huatulco on land, the hotels we work with, the different types of boats we are using, examples of other activities you can do here in Huatulco, etc., etc. You can have a look at it already but we are still putting the pictures in.

One website I discovered that is interesting to any diver is: escuba
They even offer free e-mail and have information on diving destinations all over the globe.

Another site full of information on Mexico in English and Spanish is: Mexico Travel

Sea HorseDiving Huatulco:

On one of my dives I did in June we went out to La Blanca, a nice shallow site and ideal for beginners. The visibility was not very good that day so we stayed in a smaller area and took some more time to look for interesting smaller marine creatures. What a surprise it was to be able to show my divers a seahorse I found hiding in between some rocks!

Did you know that with seahorses it is the male that gets pregnant?

Eagle Ray (Photo by Carlos "Charlie" Ramos)Cacaluta

Another encounter I had with the same divers was the next day, the visibility was a lot better again and we went diving near the Island of Cacaluta at "La Grieta" (the little canyon). After coming up through the little canyon which makes this site so interesting, we were treated by the sight of about 10 Eagle Rays swimming around us for a while.

.

In general we had a nice, calm ocean in June without any hurricanes or tropical storms coming close by. We had a few days in the middle of June with a bit lesser visibility but that cleared up pretty quick and the temperature, oh boy, even I don't need a wetsuit here in the summer, it is like a bathtub!

The Bays of Huatulco:

The national holidays have begun so it is pretty busy in Huatulco with lots of action going on. The rafting season has really started with enough water in the rivers to have the thrill of a lifetime!

I would like to put something strait about the weather here in Huatulco. A lot of people seem to think that we are dealing with hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, mudslides and other disasters on a daily basis. Nothing is further from the truth! I know that a lot of this comes from information provided by television where they love to show this kind of stuff and they even use pictures from the time after hurricane Pauline a couple of years ago, to make it look worse (and more interesting). Fact is that we are hardly ever affected by these fenomena here in the coastal area of Oaxaca. We have a canal system here that leads all rainwater nicely into the ocean without causing the floods and mudslides that occur in other parts of Oaxaca, mainly in the mountain region. We do get the occasional tremor or hurricane passing by out on the ocean but that does not have any effect on our daily lives. We can have a few days with a bit of rain and the ocean may be a bit rough but in 2 or 3 days everything clears up again. If we do get hit by an earthquake or hurricane once in a blue moon, then we clear up the mess and go on with life, remember that most of the buildings and the infra structure are constructed to deal with these kind of things.
Normally the weather here is nice & sunny, from November until May it is dry and a little bit cooler and in the summer it is more or less 30ºC/92ºF and now and then we have a little shower, mostly during the night. In the spring the air can be very humid so it feels very warm and stuffy. It is really a very attractive climate although for some people it may be a bit hot, especially when there is no wind.

.

Calendar for August:

In August we plan another diving course for local people that now have their holidays. Other than that we are looking for more activities to offer you in our packages, Huatulco has a lot of adventure to offer so keep checking our website for news!

La BufadoraPlaya Organo

The pictures you see above & below were taken by Roberto during our trips in July. Top left you see "La Bufadora" where the seawater gets pressed through a hole in the rocks and forms colom going up in the air. The others are simply impresions of our beautiful coastline and beaches. You see the beach of Organo, the beach of La Entrega and Roberto enjoying a boatride.

Emilio, Mexico, July 2000.

"The most attractive when diving with Hurricane Divers is the state they keep their equipment in. The dives were excellent, the attention and the service as well. Please keep the equipment in the same condition always, that way we know that whenever we want there is a place in Huatulco that offers safety, customer service and the possibility to do incredible dives. Thanks for your pleasent treatment (quality!) and excellent service!"

José Martin & Xochitl, Mexico, July 2000
