Hurricane Divers News
From the 6th until the 15th of June Roberto did the first PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) in the Bays of Huatulco. Hurricane Divers provided the equipment and transport necessary and Junior Plaza provided the classroom. Hereby I would like to thank everybody that helped us making it work, especially Yvonne, Coco and Charlie and the people at PADI, thanks very much guys.
We all had a great time and all 4 candidates completed the program succesfully. In the picture you see Course Director Roberto Kraak in the middle and (from left to right) the future PADI Instructors Natanael, Jorge, Gerardo and Marlon! During the IDC Charlie completed his IDC-Staff Instructor Course which makes him the first in Huatulco. Congatulations everybody!
Since Marlon finished his Internship we have a space available for a Divemaster Candidate who wants to work with us for 3 months whilst doing his or her Divemaster Course. For more info, please send us an e-mail.

Discover Scuba & the Environment
June 29th Natanael organized a day with pupils of the "Colegio Chahué" (local High School) where he teaches Biology classes, to introduce them into Scuba Diving and Marine Biology. He did a Discover Scuba with 15 participants of the ages 11 to 15 in the bay of La Entrega with the assistance of Roberto. In the intrest of safety we divided them into groups of 4 divers maximum and after the introduction into Scuba we gave them a little tour to see the coral, fish and other aquatic life forms in their natural environment. Afterwards in the Dive Center we presented them a diploma.
The project also includes classes in Marine Biology and a report from the pupils on the underwater environment and the Discover Scuba experience.
They all enjoyed the day very much and most of them expressed an intrest in learning more about scuba diving and getting certified as a diver. Hopefully we also sparked the intrest in the Aquatic Environment and need to protect it.

Website
We are still trying to improve our website and we are currently working on a page with more dive site descriptions and on a Picture Gallery with more images from our beautiful underwater world of the Emerald Coast. The links to those pages appear in the page Dive Sites and we will be putting in new descriptions and pictures every month, so check our website regularly. We are also working on a German and French version of the website, the German version we will hopefully begin to introduce in July.
We also appear now in the most comprehensive website about Huatulco and other parts of Oaxaca which is definitely worth having a look at if you are interested in this region. It is absolutely filled with information, pictures, news and comments from people who visited Huatulco.
Check it out at: www.tomzap.com

Diving Huatulco:
Good news! Since 2 or 3 months it is prohibited for the local fisherman to use a compressor while diving. They used to use this method to catch octopus and lobster and they used to catch loads of them. In the last couple of months we have seen a large increase in the numbers of octopus and lobster in the area and it is now very common to encounter them on any dive. Two weeks ago we found more then 35 little lobsters hiding under an overhang in the rocks!
.
Another interesting encounter we had while doing a dive with the IDC Candidates the beginning of June. Diving "El Violin" Natanael spotted 2 White Tip Sharks of about 3ft/1m passing closeby. It is not uncommon to encounter other species of sharks but is more common here to see Nurse Sharks or Angel Sharks, so it was a nice experience.

Expobuceo 2000
June 16th, 17th &18th this biggest Dive Show in Mexico took place in Mexico City. Yvonne went there to check out the latest on diving in Mexico and promote us amongst the visitors and exhibitors. She came back with some interesting contacts and a new mouthpiece.
.
The Bays of Huatulco:
The Association of Adventure Tourism of Huatulco (ASHTA) introduced the team from Huatulco that is going to participate in the Mexican Championship of Extreme Sports (RETO 2000) which will take place here in the Huatulco area October 12th to 14th of 2000. There are 2 Huatulceños in the team, Alex and Edgar and the other 2 members are professionals from Mexico City invited by ASHTA and the Municipality of Huatulco to join the team. The introduction took place during a breakfast paid for by the Municipality which was also meant to attract sponsors for the team.
Alex and Edgar are also invited to participate in an Eco Challenge in Malaysia in November this year, and Alex is planning to go there. As member of ASHTA and the local society we will support him with getting his PADI Open Water Diver Certification which is one of the prerequisites for entering in th Eco Challenge.
.
Calendar for July:
In July we are planning to do a Discover Scuba with the employee's of a local Tour Operator and we are scheduling a PADI Scuba Diver Course the second week of July with a group of kids that will have their school holidays and their parents. We still have space available, contact us for more info.

The pictures you see above were taken by Alejandro who sent them to us by e-mail. He took them in last May on his dives at "La Grieta" near the Bay of Cacaluta and "Morros Maguey" in the Bay of Maguey. They show a white spined "Margarita" Sea Urchin and a little Green Moray.
The pictures below were taken during and after the IDC we did. On the left you see Jorge doing one of his excellent Academic Teaching Presentations. On the right, well, for some reason the guys seem very happy that the IDC was over, and I thought doing the IDC was the fun part! In this picture you see Charlie (second from the left) as a newly certified IDC-Staff Instructor.

Following some comments out of our Guest Comment Book in the Dive Center:
"I think it is very important to achieve, establish, declare and determine my satisfaction participating in this course (IDC) and all other courses. I had the opportunity to learn and practice again and again my skills, diving and knowledge and to learn how to give other people the opportunity to dive and that way fullfill a dream of part of my life."
Gerardo, Mexico, June 2000.
"Thank you for the good time you gave us and for teaching us diving. All the best for your business."
Monica (12), Mexico, June 2000.
"What a treat to watch Pili get her SCUBA CERTIFICATION. Your operation is first class, organized and safe. Good luck for years of succes and good visibility.
Like Mac Arthur and Scharzenegger "we'll be back"!"
Andy, USA, June 2000.
"It was excellent being underwater without having to come up to the surface to get air. Best of luck in the coming holidays and I think: yes, you you will get a lot of people wanting to come diving."
Herminio (14), Mexico, June 2000.
