or

  • Be a renewed PADI Underwater Instructor (or PADI Instructor with a higher rating).

or

  • Have completed an IDC/OWSI Program within the past 12 months.

and

  • For some Specialty Instructor ratings you need to be certified as a Specialty Diver for the particular specialty area.

Note: To be certified as a PADI Specialty Instructor after taking a Specialty Instructor Training Course, an individual must:

  • Have satisfactorily completed all course performance requirements.

  • Have made at least 10 dives in the particular specialty area (except for the Equipment Specialist Instructor rating. There are some Specialties for which you need to have made at least 20 dives).

  • Submit to the appropriate PADI Office a completed application signed by the PADI Course Director who conducted the training along with a photo and the application fee.

Notes:

  • After successfully completing specialty instructor training, PADI Assistant Instructors may apply only for PADI Specialty Instructor certification in nondiving specialties.

  • If you take a Specialty Instructor Training Course from a Course Director you don't have to certify at least 25 divers to any level to show experience in diving instruction, as you have to if you apply directly to PADI without taking the course.
