PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course Details

Course Duration - 4 to 8 Days

Preparation / Self Study                                                                                       

  • Answer the Knowledge Reviews in  Instructor Candidate Workbook using the indicated Manuals and Books

  • Read Encyclopedia of Recr.  Diving and complete Workbook (optional)

  • Pratice Diving Skills (optional)

Knowledge Development                                                                        20 - 36 hrs.

  • Attend 15 Knowledge Development Presentations from IDC Curriculum conducted by our Staff

  • Present at least 2 Knowledge Development Presentations

  • Complete 5 Dive Theory Exams

  • Complete AI Standards Exam (optional)

Confined Water or Pool Training                                                            12 - 20 hrs.

  • Pratice demonstrating Diving Skills and Evaluation (Skill Circuit)

  • Attend Demonstration of Confined Water Teaching Presentation

  • Present at least 2 Confined Water Teaching Presentations

  • 800 m. Swim w/ Mask, Snorkel, Fins

  • Discover Scuba Workshop (optional)

Open Water Training                                                                                  5 - 8 hrs.

  • Present at least 1 Open Water Teaching Presentation (2 skills)

  • Adventure Dive Workshop

  • Rescue Excercise Workshop

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy Workshop (optional)

Example Schedule

With preparation and over 6 days. You need to prepare for this course so you need to book with enough time in advance, so we can get you the materials, or you can get them from PADI yourself. We are flexible and will adjust a schedule when appropriate. We will spend all the time with you, that is needed to complete a course.

  • 09:30 - 13:00 ---- presentations by staff

  • Third Day

  • 09:30 - 11:30 ---- candidates confined water presentations

  • 11:30 - 13:00 ---- presentations by staff

  • 14:00 - 16:00 ---- dive theory exam

  • 16:00 - 18:00 ---- candidates knowledge development pres.

  • Fourth Day

  • 09:30 - 12:00 ---- Adventure Dive workshop

Course Prerequisites

To enroll in a PADI OWSI Program, an individual must:

  • Be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor or as a current instructor member in good standing with another recreational diver training organization for at least six months.

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Submit medical clearance for diving signed by a physician, attesting to fitness to dive. The medical clearance must be current within the previous 12 months. The physician signing the medical clearance cannot be the applicant. (The RSTC Medical Statement is useful and recommended for this purpose unless local requirements specify other documents.)

  • Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 dives showing experience in night diving, deep diving and underwater navigation. 

  • Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months.

  • Submit documentation of any equivalent certifications for entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership level issued by another recreational diver training organization. (PADI Members who have these records on file at PADI do not need to resubmit.)

Note: To be certified as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, an individual must:

  • Successfully complete a PADI IE (Instructor Evaluation) conducted by a PADI Instructor Examiner.

And to attend an IE, the instructor candidate must:

  • Have successfully completed an IDC or OWSI Program.

  • Have at least 100 logged dives.
