PADI Assistant Instructor Course Details

Course Duration - 3 to 5 Days

Preparation / Self Study                                                                                   

  • Answer the Knowledge Reviews in  Instructor Candidate Workbook using the indicated Manuals and Books

  • Read Encyclopedia of Recr.  Diving and complete Workbook (optional)

  • Pratice Diving Skills (optional)

Knowledge Development                                                                        10 - 20 hrs.

  • Attend 7 Knowledge Development Presentations from IDC Curriculum conducted by our Staff.

  • Present at least 2 Knowledge Development Presentations

  • Complete the AI Standards Exam

  • Complete Divemaster or Instructor Preassessment Exams (optional)

Confined Water or Pool Training                                                            10 - 16 hrs.

  • Pratice demonstrating Diving Skills and Evaluation (Skill Circuit)

  • Attend Demonstration of Confined Water Teaching Presentation

  • Present at least 2 Confined Water Teaching Presentations

  • Discover Scuba Workshop (optional)

  • Rescue Excercise Workshop (optional)

Open Water Training                                                                                  4 - 5 hrs.

  • Present at least 1 Open Water Teaching Presentation (2 skills)

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy Workshop (optional)

Example Schedule

With preparation and over 4 days. You need to prepare for this course so you need to book with enough time in advance, so we can get you the materials, or you can get them from PADI yourself. We are flexible and will adjust a schedule when appropriate. We will spend all the time with you, that is needed to complete a course.

  • 09:30 - 14:00 ---- orientation and presentations by staff

  • 15:00 - 18:00 ---- skill circuit & rescue workshop

  • In your own time - study and prepare presentation

  • Second Day

  • 09:30 - 13:00 ---- presentations by staff

  • 14:00 - 16:00 ---- c. w. presentation by staff and D.S. workshop

  • 16:00 - 18:00 ---- candidates knowledge development pres.

  • In your own time - study and prepare presentations

  • Third Day

  • 09:30 - 11:30 ---- candidates confined water presentations

  • 11:30 - 13:00 ---- presentations by staff

  • 14:00 - 16:00 ---- dive theory exam

  • 16:00 - 18:00 ---- candidates knowledge development pres.

  • In your own time - study and prepare presentations

  • Fourth Day

  • 09:30 - 12:00 ---- candidates open water teaching presentations

  • 12:00 - 14:00 ---- Peak Performance Buoyancy workshop

  • 15:00 - 17.00 ---- candidates confined water presentations

  • 17:00 - 19:00 ---- AI standards exam & paperwork

Course Prerequisites

To enroll in a PADI Assistant Instructor course, an individual must:

  • Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or leadership level with another diver training organization.

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months. A licensed physician must sign the form and state that the candidate is fit for diving. The physician signing the medical clearance cannot be the applicant. (The RSTC Medical Statement is useful and recommended for this purpose unless local requirements specify other documents.)

  • Have completed and logged at least 60 dives showing experience in night diving, deep diving and underwater navigation as documented in the individual’s log book.

  • Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months.

  • Submit documentation of any equivalent certifications for entry-level, advanced, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization. (PADI Members who have these records on file at PADI do not need to resubmit.)

  • If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course dive rescue assessment.

Note: To be certified as PADI Assistant Instructor the candidate must:

  • Satisfactorily complete all course performance requirements. 

And the certifiying Course Director or IDC-Staff Instructor must:

  • Submit a completed, signed Assistant Instructor Application to the appropriate PADI Office along with the required photo, application fee, and equivalent certification documentation (if applicable). Upon approval of the application, PADI will issue a PADI Assistant Instructor card.
